A Reflection of Heaven

On Kim’s last wheelchair ride with me around our park last year before she passed on September 27, we stopped at the gazebo and looked at the pond, the view in the photo. She liked it so much that she had it on her phone home screen. We sat quietly, and she softly said, “It’s beautiful.” Those two words carried a world of meaning for me. It was the last beautiful outdoor site she saw before she “departed,” to use the New Testament term.
What she saw after that would have been speechlessly more beautiful.
We often talk about how much more beautiful heaven will be than anything on earth. Where does beauty on earth come from? My theory is that beautiful things on earth are a reflection of their greater realities in Heaven.
God created the earth (and he loves us), so of course, it is beautiful. It’s a reflection of Heaven, where he is, which is indescribably more beautiful.
Roxanne Wermuth in Inked for Eternity, the book I wrote with her, describes Heaven as having some similar natural appearances but being indescribably more brilliant in color and feel. One doesn’t merely observe it but is part of it, “knit into it,” as she puts it. Hers and other anecdotal testimonies are that Heaven is even more real than our present earthly life.
Beauty on the earth is a reflection of the greater reality that awaits those who believe. Believers have so much to look forward to.
Similarly, I must also wonder if the evil and ugliness of the world might be a reflection of the dark, demonic side of the spiritual world. Such speculation might be too much, but you get the point.
Every day I’m home I pray at the pond, and I think of what it might be like for her in heaven. I long to be there—but after I finish my task on earth.
Whenever you see something in the natural world that is particularly beautiful, see it as Heaven’s reflection.
What might that be for you? And what does that experience do for you?
