The Galatians 3:28 Society

Musuta and IMusuta was a local kid where I lived in Tanzania. His father mistreated him, and my parents welcomed him in. Like any preschool kids, Musuta and I simply became best friends. My mother used this photo on her 1963 Christmas card. I always thought it was natural. In my adulthood I realized how in-your-face it was at the time.

How hierarchical and divided we humans have made the world. And someone somewhere will always need to fight for equality and for change in attitudes.

But the One who created us still has by far the best, and only universal, approach to human equality and a just society. If only more people would receive it. It’s quite simple, but it requires the death of false human pride in three basic areas.

Galatians 3:28 is not a nice Bible verse to nod agreement and then ignore. It is a thumbnail blueprint, the core of a mindset that transforms and lifts up the entire social interaction of those who embrace it.

“There is neither Jew nor Greek, neither slave nor free, neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

When we are in true covenantal relation with God through Christ—which establishes our fundamental human and spiritual right in John 1:12—three things should happen:

1. We have no favoritism of race, ethnicity, or culture. All are equal, and all need redemption in Christ. There is no place for any form of prejudice nor any need for getting political because true believers embrace one another above any distinctions of this world.

2. We have no favoritism between rich, middle class, or poor—and so much so that even a person who is bound in slavery is to be considered equal to those who are free (which is how true New Testament Christianity undermined slavery in the Roman Empire and the nineteenth century.)

3. We have no favoritism between male and female. Both sexes were created equally; woman came from man, and man comes from woman. There is no place for chauvinism and thus no need for feminism.

Though it may sound like pie in the sky to some people, it is God’s intent. In whatever measure possible, a Galatians 3:28 society becomes possible as ego-crucified humility receives and practices the grace of God.

I encourage and challenge you to practice it with me.
